A group of youths in Rubirizi District have expressed their frustration after Rubirizi FM abruptly canceled their popular “Youth Chat” talk show in favor of live coverage of a thanksgiving event for Rev. Fr. Max Mubangizi. Several panelists who were scheduled to participate in the talk show claim they were not informed of the change in advance and incurred unnecessary transport costs.
One of the affected panelists expressed disappointment, saying, “I traveled all the way for the talk show, only to find out it had been canceled without any notice. This is unfair to us, especially since many of us have limited resources.”
The program’s host, Tugume Muzafaru, took to WhatsApp to explain the situation, stating that the decision to prioritize live coverage of the thanksgiving event was made by station management. In his message, he assured the youths that Rubirizi FM remains committed to serving the community and addressing their interests.
“Rubirizi FM is doing its best to serve the community, and while this decision was made by management, we continue to prioritize youth issues,” Tugume stated.
However, the youths were quick to express their dissatisfaction, with many claiming that the “Youth Chat” program is vital for addressing pressing issues affecting them, including unemployment, education, and development opportunities.
“The Youth Chat program is more important to us than any thanksgiving event. It’s our only platform to discuss real issues that affect our daily lives. Canceling it like this shows a lack of understanding of what matters to us,” a youth representative remarked.
The sudden cancellation has sparked a debate within the community about the importance of maintaining consistent programming that serves specific demographics, particularly the youth, who feel sidelined by the decision. The affected youths are now calling on Rubirizi FM to engage with them more transparently and prioritize the issues that matter most to the younger generation.
