President Kagame Targets Exploitative Churches with New Tax Policy

In a bold move to address the issue of exploitative religious institutions, President Paul Kagame has introduced new taxes on the rapidly growing number of churches in Rwanda. This decision comes in response to concerns that many of these churches have been exploiting citizens under the guise of religious practices.

The Rwandan government has taken significant steps to regulate the proliferation of churches, which has seen a surge in recent years. Authorities announced this week that approximately 8,000 churches have been shut down for operating illegally and failing to meet required infrastructural standards. These closures are part of a broader effort to ensure that religious institutions adhere to regulations and contribute fairly to society.

The new tax policy aims to curb the misuse of religious organizations for personal gain and to ensure that churches operate transparently and responsibly. By implementing these taxes, President Kagame seeks to protect citizens from exploitation and to promote accountability within the religious sector.

This move reflects the government’s commitment to maintaining order and fairness in all sectors, including religious organizations, which play a significant role in Rwandan society.

According to Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) the regulatory body for religious organizations some 59. % of the 13,000 inspected in the last month have been closed down due to non-compliance.
