Kyamuhunga People’s SACCO: 25 Years of Transforming Western Uganda Communities

Communities in Western Uganda are celebrating a significant milestone as the Kyamuhunga People’s SACCO (KYAPS) marks its 25th anniversary. Over the past quarter-century, KYAPS has played a pivotal role in uplifting the region’s economy by providing affordable loans that have enabled members to start small businesses, improve household incomes, and transform their lives. At the silver jubilee celebration, held with much fanfare, Paul Kahigi, the SACCO’s Chairperson, highlighted the organization's impact on the youth. “We have seen a tremendous shift in the lives of our young people, especially through the Bodaboda loan scheme,” Kahigi shared. “These loans have not only provided employment for the youth but have also empowered them to support their families. Many are now able to pay school fees for their children, something that was previously a struggle,” he added. Among those benefiting from the SACCO’s support […]

Proposed Bill to Elect Leader of the Opposition Sparks Deepening Divisions Within NUP

The recent decision by Parliament to grant leave to Richard Lumu, the Mityana South legislator from the Democratic Party, to introduce the Administration of Parliamentary Bill 2024 is poised to deepen divisions within the National Unity Platform (NUP) and weaken the broader opposition. The bill, which seeks to have the Leader of the Opposition (LOP) elected by opposition legislators rather than appointed by the leading opposition party, has sparked significant controversy. Lumu argues that the current system is undemocratic, depriving opposition members of the right to choose their leader, a practice that he claims undermines the very principles of democracy. During a plenary session in Gulu, he passionately advocated for this change, questioning why the Leader of the Opposition should not be elected by all opposition members of Parliament, as is done with leadership positions globally. However, this proposal has […]

President Kagame Targets Exploitative Churches with New Tax Policy

In a bold move to address the issue of exploitative religious institutions, President Paul Kagame has introduced new taxes on the rapidly growing number of churches in Rwanda. This decision comes in response to concerns that many of these churches have been exploiting citizens under the guise of religious practices. The Rwandan government has taken significant steps to regulate the proliferation of churches, which has seen a surge in recent years. Authorities announced this week that approximately 8,000 churches have been shut down for operating illegally and failing to meet required infrastructural standards. These closures are part of a broader effort to ensure that religious institutions adhere to regulations and contribute fairly to society. The new tax policy aims to curb the misuse of religious organizations for personal gain and to ensure that churches operate transparently and responsibly. By implementing […]

Speaker Among Halts Motion to Censure Parliamentary Commissioners After Court Ruling

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has decisively halted a motion initiated by MP Theodore Ssekikubo aimed at censuring four Parliamentary Commissioners, including the Leader of the Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga. The controversy surrounding these payments had already escalated to the judiciary, leading to a legal battle in the High Court in the case of Daniel Bwette vs. Parliamentary Commission. On August 12, 2024, the court delivered a ruling that validated the payments, affirming that the Parliamentary Commission possessed the authority to approve such allowances with the approval of Parliament. In a session marked by firm leadership, Speaker Among emphasized the necessity for Parliament to respect the court's decision, cautioning against revisiting matters […]
